FAQ

  • Because we have limitations on the size of our team, we have a competitive application to join the club. Our team size is limited by the availability of student leadership, funding, equipment, and space.

We encourage everybody to apply regardless of technical skill level, major, coursework, or job experience. We highly value a passion for robotics and enthusiasm to join our team.

  • The application process consists of two stages: A google form application (link above) and potentially a zoom interview with two members of our leadership team.

If you are invited to an interview, expect further instructions. For Mechanical and Software teams, you will also be asked to complete and submit a technical prompt at this point.

  • To learn more about the different sub-teams you can apply to, please visit the Our Team page under the About section of our website.

Note: Due to the limited size of the Electrical Hardware subteam, applicants are highly encouraged to also apply to the Software subteam as well.

  • All ARUW members are expected to commit 9 hours of scheduled working time per week.

  • No prior experience or skills are required to join ARUW. For software team members, we expect that you have taken CSE 123 or equivalent (or CSE 142 and 143). No specific programming languages are required.

  • If you would like to apply to more than one sub-team, submit the application multiple times. Feel free to keep a copy of your answers and submit the same responses to sub-team-agnostic questions on each. Applying to multiple sub-teams will not increase your chances of being accepted. We will select what we believe to be the most appropriate sub-team for you based on your responses and treat it as a single application. If accepted to ARUW, your acceptance offer will be to only one sub-team.

  • The application form itself is biographical data and a handful of short-answer free-response questions so that we can get to know you. It shouldn’t take more than half an hour. However, note that should you be selected for an interview, the Mechanical and Software team applications each have an included technical question, which might take an hour or more. Please email us if this poses an issue.

  • If you have experience with programming, mechanical, or hardware design, we recommend that you share some of your work (using GitHub, GitLab, Google Drive, etc.) in the “Is there anything else we should know?” question by sharing a link. Even a small amount of code or some pictures of the things you have designed or created gives us a better understanding of your skillset. If you do not have relevant experience (for example, you are applying to the software team without much programming experience), it is totally OK to not have anything. We are interested in all skill levels.

  • ARUW does ask all members to pay a $15 membership fee per quarter. This money goes directly to funding our robot development. Please contact us directly if you believe this may pose a problem.

If you have any additional questions regarding the application process or your application status, please email us at robomstr@uw.edu.

Please do not contact our team/members by any other method but email.
